Plot summary
Eric Field is a fifty-something widower from Ohio who runs Main Course Consulting, a restaurant support company. He takes his first time off in years to fly to Italy, where his 24-year-old daughter Olivia has been teaching English, looking after children and picking olives. She has settled on buying a crumbling villa in Montezara, and Eric wants to talk her out of spending her inheritance on it. Over coffee they meet Francesca, the town's mayor, who explains the one-euro housing plan: abandoned heritage villas are sold to newcomers for a single euro to bring people back to the village. Three available properties disappoint the Fields, but a fourth does. Liv mentions that Eric trained as a chef. He tells Zola at his company that he will stay a month.
