Plot summary
Mecha escapes the summer heat at La Mandrágora, the rundown country estate she keeps in Salta, where she and her husband Gregorio lie by the pool drinking wine. Inside, their daughters Momi and Verónica rest on a bed. Momi says her mother means to dismiss Isabel, an Amerindian servant, over towels she believes the woman takes. Drunk, Mecha falls and hurts herself, and someone drives her to a doctor. Word of the accident reaches her cousin Tali and Tali's husband Rafael.
