Plot summary
It is 1988 in Melo, a poor Uruguayan town on the Brazilian border, and the residents are preparing for a visit by Pope John Paul II. The media promise thousands of pilgrims, many of them Catholic Brazilians expected from across the border, and the townspeople draw up plans to sell food, drink, paper flags and souvenirs to the crowds. Beto, a petty smuggler, hauls contraband by bicycle and can no longer manage the heaviest loads, so he hopes to earn enough for a motorbike. His venture is a public lavatory, The Pope's Toilet, where pilgrims would pay to use it. Money is short, and a local customs officer stands in his way.
