Plot summary
Kumiko is twenty-nine and lives alone in Tokyo, where she works an office job she despises and fields her mother's calls about finding a husband. Her only pleasures are her rabbit, Bunzo, and hunting for treasure, which leads her to a VHS tape of Fargo in a cave by the shore. She takes the film for a documentary and studies the scene where a man buries a satchel of ransom money beside a snowy highway, noting every detail. When she tries to take an atlas from a library, the guard lets her keep the map of Minnesota. Under threat of replacement at work, she abandons Bunzo on a train and flies to Minneapolis on her boss's company card, carrying a hand-stitched map.
