Plot summary

A stray kitten makes his home in the garbage behind a dilapidated building in the Mission District of San Francisco, sleeping in a cardboard box on the heap and nuzzling the stuffed animal he keeps there. The kitten is fiercely independent and forages the streets for food alone. When a passerby in the street offers him something to eat, the kitten bolts. Later, a fighting pit bull is moved into the yard behind the building, chained to a cinder block by a doghouse. The kitten is at first very scared of the dog. The two of them play with a bottlecap.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Kitbull (2019)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Rosana Sullivan started sketching the little black kitten in 2013 while working on a feature film at Pixar, after a colleague showed her a video of a cat arching its back to act tough and then falling off a counter, a gap between self-perception and reality she wanted to capture in a kitten.
  • Kathryn Hendrickson said she and Rosana Sullivan began collaborating on Kitbull outside work hours a few years before the SparkShorts program existed, intending to make the short on their own until Sullivan was given the chance to direct and it found a home at the studio.
  • To see San Francisco's Mission district from the kitten's point of view, the creators walked around with a selfie stick held low to the ground, and Sullivan walked Valencia Street photographing abandoned lots and cardboard boxes to imagine where a stray kitten would really live.
  • SPOILERSullivan said Bernal Hill "was always the goal" and represented the conclusion of the kitten and pit bull's relationship, the place where they rise above the fray; she added that she always climbed the hill alongside her husband and that the short drew in part on that relationship.
  • The short is set in San Francisco's Mission District, a location that mattered to Sullivan because she lived there after moving to the city, and Hendrickson said the sound designer layered ambient noises from the Bay Area Rapid Transit into the background.
