Plot summary
Miranda is sixteen and lives in California's Santa Clarita Valley. Her mother abandoned her, she has dropped out of school, and she supports herself with a job at McDonald's while Charlie, her father, is in a mental institution. When he is released, he talks about naked Chinese men swimming ashore to live in California, and he hunts treasure he is sure lies buried nearby: the gold of the Spanish explorer Juan Florismarte Torres. His metal detector and his books point him to the local Costco, and he urges Miranda to take a job there.
