Plot summary

James Henderson works for a corporation doing business in a young Eastern European democracy, assisting his supervisor, Gabrielle Martin, on a development contract. Before the deal closes, a military coup deposes President Petrenko, and news reports say the president has been killed. Henderson hurries Martin out of their hotel as the other guests panic, then stays behind to collect a hidden pistol. Soldiers under the ex-KGB agent Vorza take the building and let no one leave. Henderson evades them, and he and Matt Gibbons, another American in town for the contract, trade ideas about who is behind the coup. Both point to General Lazar, the officer they believe is seizing power.
