Plot summary
Araña runs a hotel, working the desk, the bar and the door, and owns the building. Two assassins walk in, take the guns he keeps at the front desk and tell him they have been hunting him for a while. From a high window, an old sniper keeps watch with his rifle. He telephones his daughter but keeps his distance because of his work, and he sends a streetwalker to visit a man named Sanchez on the roof across the way. Sanchez is sent to an abandoned car for his payment and collects the diamonds left there; the officers Miguel and Lance arrive, handcuff him and take the diamonds. At a hideout, Lance and The Woman In Red talk about new passports and identities until gunfire breaks out and a gang outside calls on them to surrender.

- Kill Chain was originally structured so that Nicolas Cage's character would not appear until the back half of the film, but the producers worried about him being absent from the start, so it was rebuilt with a framing story that puts Cage in the opening.
- Ken Sanzel drew on the Raymond Chandler short story I'll Be Waiting for the hotel setting and three interwoven stories, then restructured them after Richard Linklater's Slacker so the killer in one story becomes the victim in the next, opening the way for Ryan Kwanten's storyline.
