Plot summary
Roritor Pharmaceuticals is short of money when its scientist Chris Cooper develops a cure for clinical depression, a goal he took up after his father's suicide. The high-dose antidepressant Gleemonex lifts users into their happiest memory. Company head Don Roritor, with his assistant Marv, rushes the drug into production without enough testing. Early subjects include Mrs. Hurdicure, an elderly woman in deep depression, and Wally Terzinsky, a husband and father who does not realize he is gay and gets the pill from his therapist. The rock star Grivo takes it too. Chris is swept up in the fame the drug brings, and his fellow scientist Alice is his apparent love interest.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Dave Foley, the troupe's fifth member, had quit and was already working as a cast member on NewsRadio by the time the film was made, but he was contractually obligated to be in it.
- Cancer Boy, played by Bruce McCulloch in a bald cap and pale white makeup, was found by many to be in exceedingly poor taste, and Paramount Pictures fought extensively with the troupe to cut the character from the film, to no avail.
- An original working title for the movie was The Drug, which is what Gleemonex is extensively called in the film; "Brain Candy" is never actually heard in it, and Bruce McCulloch came up with the name at the studio's request for something more marketable.
- The film's poor box office was turned into a plot device in the opening episode of the 2022 Amazon Prime Video revival series of The Kids in the Hall: the movie is under a curse, lifted when a VHS copy is bought at a garage sale and it finally breaks even.
- Grivo, played by Bruce McCulloch, is a rock star famous for his bleak and pessimistic rock and a general indifference toward his audience, fame and music; McCulloch loosely based Grivo's image off the heavy metal singer Glenn Danzig.
