Plot summary
Michael is a boy whose family sets out to sail around the world, and he has his dog with him on the trip. A violent storm hits and sweeps Michael and the dog overboard into the sea. Michael washes up on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean, frightened and with nobody else there, and he and the dog must find a way to survive. He believes he is alone until Kensuke confronts him. Kensuke is a Japanese man from Nagasaki who has lived on the island secretly since World War II, and he is angry that Michael has arrived.

- The animated adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's Kensuke's Kingdom was announced in February 2019 with Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe and Raffey Cassidy already set as voice cast, but it did not enter production until September 2020 after securing new financing.
