Plot summary
Kaiji Ito is thirty years old and works at a small shop, barely covering his costs, with gambling and drinking filling his days. He is frustrated with society and longs for change, though nothing comes of it. A loan shark, Rinko Endō, comes for payment on a debt that a vanished acquaintance left behind and that Kaiji co-signed. He has nothing to give her. Endō lays out two choices: ten years spent paying the loan off, or one night aboard the ship Espoir, where a gambling tournament offers winnings large enough to erase the debt. Kaiji takes the night on the ship.
