Plot summary

Sung Sai-Kit argues cases for a living, and no rival in Guangdong matches his record at winning. The methods he uses have made his family comfortable, but they have cost him: none of his sons has lived past a year, and his wife, Madam Sung, grieves for each of them. When the thirteenth boy dies, Sung gives up the law for business, running an inn in the town and a tea stand outside the city. He misses the courtroom and rehearses his final case to fill the time. Then Madam Sung meets a woman whose husband died in suspicious circumstances, and Sung hopes to return to court.
