Plot summary
Susan Berlanger is a professional flutist in Philadelphia who has worn a leg brace since childhood. She is set to enter a marriage of convenience with Frank Bantam, a gay investment banker, so that he can hide his sexuality and improve his prospects at work, but she decides against it when she sees the arrangement would not meet her or his sexual needs. She accepts a place on a European concert tour instead. While in Paris she settles on a cast to cover her leg and travels alone to the French Alps, where she hopes to be treated without pity.
