Plot summary
On his wedding day, Danny Maccabee hears his fiancée tell her friends that she is marrying him for his money. He walks out and goes to a bar, where he claims to be unhappily married and wins a woman over. Years later he is a plastic surgeon in Los Angeles. He still wears the ring and uses the same story so that women will not expect commitment. Katherine Murphy, who manages his office and is divorced with two children, knows about the scheme. At a party Danny meets Palmer, a sixth-grade math teacher, and they spend a night on the beach. The next morning Palmer finds the ring in his pocket and is furious. Danny says his wife, Devlin Adams, cheated on him and that they are divorcing. Palmer wants to meet her.
