Plot summary
Sam is seventeen and has been on a self-destructive path. Suspended from boarding school, he comes home to rural New Zealand in the 1990s and finds that Ruth, his English grandmother, has moved in. Ruth, a former war photographer, broke her leg and uses a wheelchair; she drinks gin by the jug and relies on a nurse, Sarah, for everyday tasks. Sam's father Robert, who is keeping the household afloat with Ruth's money, leaves on a work trip and puts Ruth in Sam's care. The two have not met before, and their first meeting is awkward. Both are strong-willed, and Sam is left with Ruth and Sarah for the school holidays.
