Plot summary
Silesia, 1944: the war has barely reached the home front, where teenage painter Thomas and his girlfriend Melanie belong to the Hitler Youth. When the Eastern Front collapses, the boys of Thomas's unit are drafted into the Volkssturm, and an air raid kills his family, leaving him to be deployed to the front lines. He survives a battle against Soviet shock troops inside a factory and, dazed, shelters in a bomb crater, where a student nurse named Astrid is foraging. The two flee west with the columns of refugees and walk for weeks to a pick-up post for an army evacuation transport; in the scramble for seats on the lorries they are separated and Thomas is left alone on the road.
