Plot summary
Yelena has money and a wish to sing in public, though no ear for pitch, and when she hears of the conductor Costa Fraschini she takes the shepherd Kostya Potekhin for him and asks him to a party she is giving. Kostya accepts, thinking the invitation genuine, and arrives with the animals of his kolkhoz herd. The notes he plays on his pan flute call the beasts into the dining room, and the guests break up in confusion. Yelena's housemaid Anyuta, who loves him quietly, watches his eyes stay on Yelena. Once the mix-up comes out, Yelena's mother drives him off, and he sets out for the city to earn his living with music.
