Plot summary
The freighter Eugene Onegin is bound for Odessa carrying ten tigers and two lions for the zoo, and it needs somebody to look after them. Shuleykin, who cooks at a Soviet trade mission in a tropical port, wants only to go home, so he lets the crew believe he is a wild animal trainer and takes the job. The company that supplied the animals adds a chimpanzee, which slips out of its sack on board. Belongings disappear. Bolts and nuts turn up in the soup. Suspicion settles on Marianna, the captain's niece, whose pranks are aimed at the strict first mate, Oleg Petrovich.

- The film came about after Nikita Khrushchev, hosting Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie at a 1959 Moscow circus, watched Margarita Nazarova bring tiger cubs to his box and asked why she had never been cast in a movie.
- The studio's hunt for a screenplay ended when Viktor Konetsky, a former sailor and beginning writer, told the Lenfilm director his life story about a bear that once escaped from a cage during a sea voyage.
- A chimpanzee named Pirate was borrowed from the Kyiv Zoo along with his bride, a monkey called Chilita, because he refused to leave or perform without her.
- Aleksei Smirnov was the only actor to refuse a stunt double and dreamed up dangerous stunts himself: in one scene he holds tight onto a tiger's tail, and he spent a whole month feeding the animals to gain their trust.
- The lion Vaska, borrowed from the Leningrad Zoo after appearing in Lenfilm films such as Don Quixote, had most of his scenes shot separately because the tigers did not get along with him.
