Plot summary
Natasha is five and lives in Moscow with her mother and older brother Yura. Their mother leaves for the countryside to arrange a summer rental for the family, putting Yura in charge. With friends coming over, he warns his sister that he will tear her head off unless she is asleep before the housemaid Arisha returns. Natasha instead lets herself out for a first walk through the city on her own. A caregiver at a kindergarten cannot get her surname or address out of her. The girl then appears in the apartment of Yevgeny Semyonovich, a childless geologist who takes her for an abandoned child; a neighbor insists the girl belongs to her, and the two argue.
