A young graduate of culinary school, Tosya Kislitsyna, comes to an isolated logging camp in the northern forest to take the job of cook. In the evening the girls take her to the dancehall, where the young men pass her by. Ilya, whose crew has just lost its place on the camp's wall of honor to Filya's, is there playing checkers; he has the music switched off, and Tosya marches over and puts it back on. Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Yuri Chulyukin promised the title role of Tosya to his wife, Natalya Kustinskaya, who prepared seriously for the audition, then learned from a cinematographer that shooting had begun with Nadezhda Rumyantseva in the lead; the council called Kustinskaya too beautiful for Tosya, and she refused the consolation part of Anfisa.
- Vyacheslav Shalevich and Yuri Belov auditioned for the part of Ilya and Vladimir Treshchalov was approved, but an order came to shoot Nikolai Rybnikov, who had already played a protagonist well in the film The Height.
- Nikolai Rybnikov lost 20 kg to look younger as Ilya and pushed for his wife Alla Larionova to play Anfisa, but Svetlana Druzhinina already had the part and kept it, which left relations between Rybnikov and Druzhinina frosty during the shoot.
- Tosya is eighteen in the script, yet Nadezhda Rumyantseva had already turned thirty when filming began, and while Ilya looks much older than Tosya on screen, the actors Nikolai Rybnikov and Rumyantseva were the same age.
- Mosfilm built the lumberjack village on Mosfilmovskaya Street, planting about three hundred trees; because shooting in Bobrovka in the Urals proved hard at thirty degrees of frost, the crew moved to the Tver region and shot the final scene in Yalta.
- The film's winter scenes were shot in the heat of August, which was bothersome for the actors, who had to wear sheepskin coats and winter hats.
- Inna Makarova, who played Nadya, was the only member of the film's team to miss the premiere: she was offended that the editing had removed the scene in which her character parts with her bridegroom Ksan Ksanych, whom she does not love.
- The film was the screen debut of Mikhail Kokshenov, who played a woodcutter shown drinking an entire carafe of water in one gulp.
