Plot summary
Joe Bell works at a mill in Oregon. His son Jadin, fifteen, tells his parents that classmates torment him at school over being gay. Joe accepts him but stays uneasy about the attention, and asks Jadin to practice his cheerleading in the back yard, away from the neighbors' view. Jadin starts seeing another boy, Chance, in secret. Bullying follows him at school and on social media. Joe sets out to walk across the country, from Idaho toward New York City, speaking out against homophobic bullying, and Jadin accompanies him on the road. Lola, Jadin's mother, and Joseph, his younger brother, stay behind in Oregon.
