Plot summary
Gary, a fifteen-year-old drifter, asks Joe Ransom for work with his crew, which poisons trees in Texas. Joe is impressed by how hard the boy works and hires him. The next day Gary brings his father, Wade, who drinks and will not work, and both are let go. Joe watches Wade beat Gary and take the money the boy earned, and when Gary comes to his house asking for the job back, Joe agrees. Gary starts hiding his wages from Wade. Joe also has an old feud with Willie Russell, a criminal who shoots and wounds him outside a friend's house.

- Producers worried that casting Gary Poulter as Wade was a risk because he was homeless, alcoholic and seriously ill, but Green stayed committed to having him in the film. Poulter, whose only other credit was a background extra on Thirtysomething, was found dead in a shallow body of water on February 19, 2013, before the film was ever released.
