Plot summary
Ten-year-old genius Jimmy Neutron builds gadgets in Retroville with his robot dog Goddard and his friends Carl Wheezer and Sheen Estevez, while classmate Cindy Vortex makes fun of his height. He launches a communications satellite hoping to find alien life, then crashes his makeshift rocket into the family's roof and upsets his mother, Judy. When the Retroland amusement park opens, popular kid Nick Dean urges the boys to sneak out, but after Jimmy's jetpack starts a fire at home his mother refuses; he uses a shrink ray to get away. Egg-like aliens from Yolkus, led by King Goobot, then take every adult in town, except Jimmy's teacher Miss Fowl. The children left behind first celebrate their freedom, then build rockets out of Retroland's rides to go after their families.

- Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius was nominated for the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, losing to Shrek, and was the first release from Nickelodeon Movies to be nominated for an Oscar.
- It was the first computer-animated film to be created entirely with off-the-shelf animation programs, which included LightWave 3D and messiah:studio.
- Nancy Cartwright, Pamela Adlon and E. G. Daily were all considered for the voice of Jimmy Neutron before Debi Derryberry was cast; it was the biggest acting role of her career at that point.
- Sheen Estevez was written as a Japanese character, named after the nickname of a Japanese employee who had worked for John A. Davis, but after the filmmakers failed to find a suitable voice actor of Japanese descent they made him Mexican and cast Jeff Garcia.
- Steve Oedekerk's six-year-old daughter came up with the idea for "burp soda", which ended up in the movie as one of Jimmy's many inventions.
- For one scene showing a crowd of 6,000 Yolkians, each alien used one of only 30 distinct animation loops.
- The film was completed in 24 months, roughly half the time most other CGI films took, with the studio's staff increased from 30 to around 150 employees to speed up the work.
- Steve Oedekerk, founder of O Entertainment, saw a still shot of the characters in a CGI magazine and cold-called John A. Davis to request a tape of the full demo short.
