Jesse Stone wants back the job of police chief in Paradise, Massachusetts. Carter Hanson, the town council president, had pushed Stone out so his son-in-law, William Butler, could take the post. Then a blast destroys the police cruiser carrying Chief Butler and officer DeAngelo, and Stone returns as temporary chief. Hasty Hathaway, a former council president, seemed to know of the blast before Hanson received official word of it.
