Plot summary
Jessie Laurent is pregnant and preparing to move into her fiancé Mark's home when a truck strikes their car as they back out of the driveway. Mark dies and Jessie loses the baby. Two months on she uses a wheelchair, and her estranged father, Leon, takes her into his house in St. Francisville, Louisiana, and gives her the bedroom of her mother, Kate, who died of a brain tumor soon after Jessie was born. In that room Jessie finds a box of four videotapes Kate recorded for her eighteenth birthday. Kate reads tarot cards, tells of a transition, and warns that an unwanted presence is haunting her daughter. Jessie has felt a gaunt black-haired woman near her since she arrived. Leon breaks the first tape and throws her wheelchair into the bayou to stop her watching the others.
