Plot summary
Jane White is a teenager whose life is wrapped up in television, and she longs to be a star on the small screen. She is certain that Gerry King, the host of a popular talk show, is her birth father, and that a guest spot on his program is how she will reach him. Her mother, who is agoraphobic and overprotective, scolds her for her love of television and for going on about the man. Jane disguises herself as a transgender prostitute and meets Barney, who helps her buy a bus ticket to Chicago. At the station she runs into Dick Smith, and the two swiftly become a couple. She and Dick set off on a chaotic trip so that Jane can face Gerry on the air.
