Plot summary
Anne has been the wife of Jakob Fedder, a minister in a small town, for thirty years, and her days are filled with cooking, housekeeping and gardening. One night a young woman named Amelia Humphries is attacked by a vampire called the Master. Tom Low, a man from Anne's past, comes to town for a project involving a mill, and Anne agrees to meet him; he says he is surprised she became a church mouse, forsaking her adventurous side. At the mill they kiss briefly, and Anne reaffirms her fidelity to Jakob. Rats swarm Tom, and the Master bites Anne's neck.
