Plot summary
Joseph Megessey, known to most people as Megs, came home from Vietnam with post-traumatic stress and has trouble fitting back into society. Another veteran from the same war, Dave, has become an alcoholic, and Megs tries to draw him out of his depression, urging him to enjoy life again and to face the memories he avoids. Dave's sister Martha lives with him and looks after him. Megs is attracted to Martha, and she to him; the two fall in love, though Dave does not approve. Megs's presence reminds Dave of the battle they both survived, and the tension among the three of them grows.
