Early training
Loudon Wainwright studied acting at Carnegie Mellon University, then left the program to take part in the Summer of Love in San Francisco.
First role
Wainwright wrote his first song, "Edgar," about a lobster fisherman. He had met the man while he was working at a boatyard on Rhode Island.
Behind the camera
Wainwright and Joe Henry composed the music for Judd Apatow's 2007 film Knocked Up, and Wainwright also played the protagonists' obstetrician in it.
A change of course
In the early 1970s, Wainwright was among the young folk singers given the "new Dylan" tag, something he later ruefully mocked in his song "Talking New Bob Dylan" from the album History (1992).
