Plot summary
Jack Ryan studies at the London School of Economics when the September 11 attacks send him into the U.S. Marines. His helicopter is shot down over Afghanistan, his spine is critically injured, and during a long recovery he meets Cathy Muller, a medical student, and Thomas Harper, a veteran CIA official who recruits him. Ten years later Ryan works on Wall Street under cover as a compliance officer while secretly reviewing financial transactions for the CIA, and Cathy is his fiancée. Russia loses a key vote at the United Nations, yet the markets barely move, and Ryan notices that money held by Russian business interests has vanished, most of it tied to the oligarch Viktor Cherevin. Accounts at Cherevin's business are closed to him as an auditor, giving him a reason to travel to Moscow.
