Plot summary
Hershell Graves, a chess purist, has spent four years in Europe in pursuit of Jazz Chess, a form of the game played for its own sake, with no winner and no loser and only beautiful positions. He returns to Toronto and finds that his brother Thaddeus has taken his place as national champion and is engaged to Marsha Thirteen, Hershell's former sweetheart, a onetime performance artist who no longer gives her violin shows. Hershell pitches Jazz Chess but is told the game needs a face like his brother's. Nick the Coach urges him back to competitive play, Thaddeus mocks his ideas, and Hershell enters the next Canadian Chess Championship against him. Thaddeus is angry when he learns of the challenge, and Marsha weighs whether to attend the tournament.
