Plot summary
Five archaeology students use explosives to enter a cave tied to a Native American legend, and inside they find prehistoric drawings and bones across the floor. A creature comes at them out of the dark. Two months on, in that same forest, ranger Danny St. Claire drinks and weeps in her station tower, holding herself to blame for the crash that killed her friend Julie. Her superior, Rick Bailey, tells her she is to stay at the station alone for a few days and asks her to drain water to ease the pressure on the cracked Devil's Gate Dam. Nightmares of the accident wake her, and she climbs down to find the tool shed door scored with claw marks. In the morning her colleague and boyfriend Justin Rawley arrives to keep her company.

- It Waits began as a screenplay by Richard Christian Matheson and Thomas E. Szollosi that a French producer bought for a UK shoot; when financing fell through, Stephen J. Cannell bought it and rewrote the lead, turning the male character "Mike" into a female forest ranger.
- Cerina Vincent was director Steven R. Monroe's first choice to play ranger Danny. After Cabin Fever in 2002 she did not want another horror film, but reading the script she was immediately drawn to the character and its acting challenges.
- The film's 26 ft ranger station tower was constructed in two pieces, and most interior shots of the tower's top half were filmed while that piece was still on the ground.
