Plot summary
Samidha, who goes by Sam, has been turning away from her family's Indian traditions to fit in at her suburban high school, where she has a budding romance with a classmate, Russ. Her mother, Poorna, wants her to keep the customs; her father, Inesh, is less strict. Sam has grown apart from Tamira, a fellow Indian student who has become withdrawn and carries a strange glass jar. Their teacher, Joyce, is worried about Tamira. Tamira asks Sam for help, saying an entity from a story they heard as children lives in the jar and has been tormenting her. Sam, embarrassed, smashes the jar and Tamira has a panic attack. When Sam goes for help, Tamira is attacked by an unseen force and disappears.

- Writer-director Bishal Dutta moved to North America from India at the age of four, and says much of his social education came from American horror films; he wondered what families like his were doing while Bruce the shark, Freddy Krueger and Jack Torrance terrified viewers.
- It Lives Inside grew out of writer-director Bishal Dutta's own childhood: he was born in India before moving to North America, and the film's story draws on Indian demonic mythology as well as a personal story from his grandfather.
