Plot summary
At the Indian embassy in Kuala Lumpur, an elderly Malaysian man kills several Indian officers before collapsing dead, and a tattooed love symbol on his neck points the R&AW agency to a rogue scientist called Love. Nobody but the suspended agent Akilan Vinod knows who Love is or where Love can be found; Akilan's wife, Meera George, was killed by Love four years earlier while he was trying to catch them. Malik, a serving operative, finds Akilan and brings him back into the investigation. Watching footage of the embassy attack, Akilan works out that the attacker had inhaled a performance-enhancing drug. Since he is under suspension, he is attached to Ayushi, a junior agent, as her deputy, and the two fly to Kuala Lumpur to find the source of the drug.

- The change of producer brought a new leading lady: Kajal Aggarwal, originally signed opposite Vikram, was dropped for Nayanthara, Bindu Madhavi was left out, and the secondary lead went to Nithya Menen after talks with Parvathy Thiruvothu.
- Priya Anand, signed as one of the lead actresses when the film was called Marma Manithan, opted out during June 2015 production disputes, sparked when Ayngaran International also claimed the rights, and Bindu Madhavi was announced as her replacement.
- When the stalled production kept the team from starting its Malaysia shoot in July 2015, Vikram stopped waiting, abandoned the specially-prepared facial hair for his role and went back to finish his other film, 10 Endrathukulla.
- The song "Halena" from the film takes its inspiration from "Trap Queen", the 2014 song by American rapper Fetty Wap.
- Iru Mugan never opened in Karnataka because of a bandh called by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike over the Kaveri River water dispute, a block that also kept Tamil films Thodari, Remo, Rekka and Devi out of the state.
