Plot summary

Abdul Khaaliq, an NRI living in Dubai, flies from Delhi toward Coimbatore on his way to Ooty. His friend Eswaramoorthy plans to elope with Zarina Begum on her wedding day, and their friend Syed Basha is part of the plan. On the flight, Seethalakshmi introduces herself as the groom's friend. The next afternoon the pair flees the wedding with Zarina's family in pursuit, and on the road to the registrar's office a pursued stranger, Rafiq, falls onto their car. Police headed by Inspector John, acting on the orders of DCP Dhanushkodi, seize Khaaliq and his friends, and Khaaliq is taken to a public gathering held by Chief Minister Arivazhagan.

In August 2019 producer Suresh Kamatchi announced he had ousted Silambarasan from Maanaadu for failing to commit to dates, after close to a year of pre-production, and other producers complained about his punctuality to the Tamil Film Producers Council. Silambarasan returned to the project in November 2019 after the issues were sorted out.
On 24 November 2021, a day before release, producer Suresh Kamatchi announced the film was postponed for undisclosed reasons; DMK MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin arranged a meeting to clear the dues and it was released as scheduled. Its 5:00 A.M. shows were cancelled when the Key Delivery Message arrived late, so the first show began at 8:30 A.M.
The Bharatiya Janata Party's minority wing asked the Chief Minister to ban the film, saying it portrayed Muslims in a bad light; the party's Tamil Nadu president, Annamalai K, then restrained members from criticising it and called it harmless entertainment.
Director Venkat Prabhu first wanted Arvind Swamy to play the corrupt DCP Dhanushkodi, but Arvind Swamy could not allot dates, so S. J. Suryah was cast instead.
Silambarasan refused to dub his portions because he was owed remuneration; producer Suresh Kamatchi promised to pay him the remainder, and he completed the remaining dubbing within a day.
According to a September 2021 report, Maanaadu was shot in several locations and its huge political-gathering scene required almost 900 computer graphic shots.
After the accident on the sets of Indian 2, producer Suresh Kamatchi assured crores of insurance for Maanaadu's cast and crew and pledged to ensure the safety of workers on the film's sets.
