Plot summary
Poor people in India leave written requests at a Bhagwan Shri Murugan temple, and the wishes they ask for come true. A DIG of Police does not believe the reports and orders his team to investigate, but the officers themselves turn into devotees. He hands the case to Ravi Sharma, an atheist, hoping to catch the man behind it: Kanthaswamy, a CBI officer in the Economic Offences Wing who has publicly exposed several high-profile cases, among them the wealthy Ponnusamy. The exposure enrages Ponnusamy's daughter Subbalakshmi, who swears to avenge the humiliation and sets out to entangle Kanthaswamy in her plans. Police keep receiving reports of a masked figure who appears to have superpowers and can fly.

- At Kanthaswamy's launch at the Devi Paradise theatre in Chennai in September 2007, guests were given an electronic invitation made in China: laptop-sized, holding an eight-minute trailer, and costing about Rs. 15,000 each, making it the most expensive invitation in Indian film history.
- The Kanthaswamy team adopted two villages near Madurai, Sangampatti and Gandhi Nagar, first to shoot in and then to provide amenities such as a school and proper roads for a year, becoming the first production team in Tamil cinema to do such a thing.
- Shooting halted in November 2007 at the Chennai Boat Club when a pole erected on the sets unexpectedly fell on director Susi Ganesan's head while cameraman Ekambaram was canning shots on his instructions, injuring him.
- During production, actor Raghuvaran died suddenly; his part was taken over by Ashish Vidyarthi, and the replacement led to a delay in the release of Kanthaswamy.
- Actor Indrajith was selected for a role in Kanthaswamy ahead of other prominent character actors Arjun Rampal, Irfan Khan and Suman.
- Comedian Vivek, who had featured in Kanthaswamy's original trailer, opted out of the film and was replaced in the cast by Vadivelu.
- India's Censor Board ordered cuts to both the Tamil Kanthaswamy, given a U certificate, and the Telugu version Mallanna, given U/A, and some theatres trimmed 15 minutes of Brahmanandam's comedy from the Telugu version.
