Plot summary
Mobile phones across Chennai tear free of their owners' hands and from shops on the same day, and the swarm assembles into a giant bird that batters the city. A council of political leaders and scientists convenes to explain the event; Dr. Vaseegaran, who has just presented a new domestic android named Nila, argues for rebuilding his dismantled robot, Chitti, to fight it. Council member Dhinendra Bohra objects, holding Chitti responsible for the death of his father. When the attacks continue at a phone tower site and at a minister's home, the Home Minister overrides the objections. Vaseegaran has already recovered Chitti's body and upgraded it with new abilities.

- Before the villain role was filled, Shankar discussed it with Kamal Haasan, Aamir Khan and Vikram, none of whom signed on; Arnold Schwarzenegger then agreed to do it for a record remuneration. The makers dropped Schwarzenegger over contract issues.
- At the time of its release, and unadjusted for inflation, 2.0 held the record as the most expensive Indian film ever made.
- 2.0 was the first film in Indian cinema to be shot natively in 3D, with cinematographer Nirav Shah doing the 3D photography.
- Denied permission to shoot at Delhi's Red Fort and Parliament, the team had visual effects designer Srinivas Mohan build those locations digitally out of a green screen sequence.
- Ahead of the release, the Cellular Operators Association of India lodged a complaint asking the Central Board of Film Certification to revoke 2.0's certificate for promoting anti-scientific attitudes towards mobile phones and cellular networks.
- Rajinikanth said director Shankar wanted to make 2.0 without any songs, but Rahman insisted an album needed at least four songs so listeners got a wholesome experience.
