Plot summary
Near Conroe, Texas, in October 2001, a nurse named Sandra Stotler is killed in her house inside a gated community, and her body is left in a nearby lake. Days later two 19-year-olds, Michael Perry and Jason Burkett, are arrested for her murder. Details in Perry's confession lead investigators to the bodies of Adam, the grandson Sandra was raising, and his friend Jeremy Richardson, killed the same day elsewhere. A Montgomery County Sheriff's Department representative says the pair, acquaintances of Adam and Jeremy, wanted Sandra's car but were locked out of the gated community afterward, so they waited for Adam to get his gate opener. Both men deny involvement. From prison they and people touched by the case talk about the killings and about executions in Texas.

- Werner Herzog originally shot profiles of five death-row inmates in Texas and Florida, one of them Michael Perry. After production began he turned Perry's case into a feature documentary, and the other interviews became the four-part miniseries On Death Row.
- Herzog was making Into the Abyss while promoting his previous film, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, and missed a special Berlinale screening of it because a chance to film one of his subjects arose suddenly.
- Herzog had wanted to make a prison film since he was 17, when he planned his first film about Bavaria's maximum-security Straubing prison. That was never realized, but the idea led him to make Into the Abyss decades later.
