Plot summary
Shot design carries a politics of its own, and a film instructor who has spent years lecturing on the visual objectification of women on screen builds that case into a documentary. Her material is a run of movie clips spanning 1896 to 2020, arranged to show how framing, camera movement and lighting handle a male subject and a female object differently. Between the clips, women and nonbinary filmmakers, theorists and scholars talk about what the male gaze does. The argument reaches the industry's hiring record: a co-producer's research into how few women direct Hollywood films led the ACLU of Southern California to open an investigation into job discrimination, and the film sets that record beside the harassment and assault cases that surfaced in 2017.
