Plot summary
Sarah Brown is fourteen when her parents die in a car crash, and she travels from Arizona to England to live with her aunt Velvet and Velvet's partner, John. Velvet once rode The Pie in the Grand National and came in first, but she was disqualified as an underage girl riding without a license, and the horse was retired to stud. His last foal is born soon after Sarah arrives. Sarah asks for the colt, and Velvet buys him. Sarah calls him Arizona Pie.
