Plot summary

Alex takes Cheryl to a party where, he promises her, something exciting will happen. She worries about leaving their ten-year-old daughter Grace alone in the car, so Alex goes out to check on the girl. Police arrive and arrest the criminals at the party, and Grace wakes to see her mother taken to prison. Ray, her grandfather, hears of the arrest from the police station, but a warning about protests at his construction site sends him there instead. Five years later Ray has lost his job and lives alone, Cheryl is still in prison, and Grace is in a children's home. Her lawyer tells Cheryl that Alex may take the girl for money, and Cheryl asks Ray to bring Grace and look after her.
