Plot summary

Diana and David Murphy are married high school sweethearts in California. Diana sells real estate and David, an architect, designs the house they mean to build. They put their savings into beachfront land in Santa Monica and begin construction, but the recession leaves her without listings and him without a job, and fifty thousand dollars is needed to keep the land. They take what remains to Las Vegas. David wins at craps; the next day the roulette tables take everything back. A high roller, John Gage, asks Diana to join him at the tables for luck, and she rolls a winner on his million-dollar bet. Gage pays for their hotel suite and gives Diana a dress she had admired. After an evening together he proposes a million dollars in exchange for a night with her, and David refuses.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Indecent Proposal (1993)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The film was first built around Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman with Warren Beatty as the billionaire. Kidman and Isabelle Adjani screen tested for Diana, and Cruise pulled out amid speculation that the story's morals clashed with his new involvement in the Church of Scientology.
  • Robert Redford would only play John Gage if the character were adjusted to be less of a villain, and he turned down the $4 million salary he was offered in exchange for a share of the gross.
  • Johnny Depp, Tim Robbins and William Baldwin were all considered for David Murphy, and Woody Harrelson abandoned Benny & Joon to take it, which brought a lawsuit from MGM-Pathe Entertainment that was settled out of court.
  • SPOILERScreenwriter Amy Holden Jones first wrote an ending in which Diana realizes she is Gage's next acquisition, tells him he cannot buy love and leaves him. She says Redford cycled four or five writers through the character and had it changed "because Robert Redford couldn't be left".
  • William Goldman was hired to rewrite the script after John Cusack turned the film down. "They couldn't get anyone to do it," Goldman said, adding that he wrote a draft and does not think anything in it was changed.
  • Adrian Lyne planted Susan Faludi's book Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women in a scene as a dig at its author, who had publicly criticized his earlier film Fatal Attraction.
  • The film drew heavy feminist attack. Betty Friedan said it told thirteen-year-old girls not to bother with homework or an MBA but to diet, get some silicone and look for a lonely billionaire, while Susan Faludi likened Gage's actions to raping a woman with money.
  • Jack Engelhard's 1988 novel turned on a cultural clash the film dropped entirely: its main character, Joshua Kane, is Jewish and the billionaire who makes the offer is an Arab, Sheikh Ibrahim.
