In late 1970s France, twenty-five-year-old Pierre returned from Wyoming to take over his father's farm, determined to usher in a new era of modern agriculture and progress. After almost two decades, a loving wife and two adolescent children, business is flourishing, and happiness blesses Pierre's household. However, despite painful sacrifices and back-breaking work to keep the farm running, fast-growing debts start piling up, threatening everything. Now, there is no turning back. How far is Pierre's family willing to go in the name of the land?

The film is inspired by the life of director Édouard Bergeon's father, Christian Bergeon. Its final shots show the grave of the character Pierre Jarjeau, dated 1954-1999, with Christian Bergeon's name substituted and the same dates, and a title card notes that in France one farmer commits suicide every day.
