Plot summary
Cody and Joey are raising six-year-old Chip Hines in Martin, Tennessee. Cody dies in a car crash, and Joey and the boy carry on without him as best they can. Then the will is read, giving Cody's sister guardianship of Chip, and the child is taken from the only home he has known. Joey had been part of this household for years, and the acceptance he found there comes apart once the will is known. Now he searches his empty house for a way to remain in Chip's life, and the friends who stand by him give what the law will not.
