Plot summary
In Greenleaf, Indiana, the town watches the Academy Awards, where local favorite Cameron Drake is nominated for playing a gay soldier. Cameron wins and, in his acceptance speech, names Howard Brackett, his high school English teacher, as a gay man. Howard is engaged to Emily Montgomery, a fellow teacher who lost weight before their wedding, and he denies the claim to his family, friends, students and colleagues while wondering whether it might be true. Reporters descend on the town, and Principal Tom Halliwell is uneasy about the attention on the school. Entertainment reporter Peter Malloy stays to follow the wedding. Emily trusts Howard.

- In & Out was inspired by Tom Hanks's 1994 Academy Awards acceptance speech for Philadelphia, in which he tearfully acknowledged his high school drama teacher and a former classmate, calling them "two of the finest gay Americans"; screenwriter Paul Rudnick developed the premise around a small-town teacher inadvertently outed after a similar public moment.
- Joan Cusack was heavily pregnant during the later stages of production in 1997, and the fact that she was pregnant was concealed; Women's Wear Daily noted in 1998 that the pregnancies of Julianne Moore and Teri Hatcher were similarly concealed in recent films of theirs.
- Frank Oz first asked Miles Goodman, who had composed several of Oz's previous films, to do the music for In & Out, but Goodman died before he could do so.
- One thing that drew wide attention at the time of release was a 12-second kiss on screen between Kline and Selleck.
- According to Oz, production was temporarily halted when much of the cast and crew contracted influenza; he recalled that "we all got sick [...] because we all got the flu."
- Despite an otherwise smooth shoot, reports later emerged of interpersonal tension between Oz and actor Wilford Brimley, though neither party has publicly discussed the nature of their disagreement.
