Plot summary
Rachel Barber is fifteen, a dance student in Melbourne. When she does not turn up to meet her father, her parents Elizabeth and Mike report her missing. She left with her backpack and some of her favorite possessions, so the police take the case for a teenage runaway. Caroline Reed Robertson, nineteen, once lived next door to the Barbers and babysat Rachel. Bullied at school, low in self-esteem and depressed, with divorced parents, she has long studied the family and copied Rachel in particular. She asks Rachel to join a confidential study that pays well. Rachel tells her boyfriend Manni about the money but keeps the person who recruited her to herself. Manni is doubtful, and he brings the study up with her parents.
