Biography

James McCallion was an Irish-American character actor whose screen, stage, radio and television work covered more than five decades. Born in 1918, he came to the United States as a child and started acting at seven, making his Broadway debut two years later in 1927 in Yours Truly opposite Leon Errol. Further Broadway credits followed, among them Roosty and But for the Grace of God, and his stage and radio success, notably on Billy and Betty, drew the attention of Hollywood studios. He appeared in early films such as Boy Slaves, Code of the Streets and Pride of the Blue Grass (1939), and from the 1950s into the early 1980s he worked in more than a hundred television programs. He starred as Mi Taylor in the NBC series National Velvet from 1960 to 1962, a part Mickey Rooney had played in the 1944 film. He died in 1991.
