Plot summary
In California, Cathy and Chris Dollanganger raise Cathy's two sons, Jory and Bart, as husband and wife, and the boys know nothing of their parents' shared past. Jory knows who his ballet-dancer father was; Bart knows nothing about his own. Bart is lonely and believes his older brother is the favored one. A woman dressed in black takes the mansion next door and invites the brothers for tea, saying she has no family except her butler, John Amos. She promises Bart anything he wishes for, and while Jory stops going, Bart returns. Cathy wants to adopt Cindy, a ballet student whose mother has died. John Amos hands Bart the diary of his great-grandfather Malcolm, and Bart promises to hide it from the family. Bart reads Malcolm's fanatical entries about women and sin, and they leave a mark on him.
