Plot summary
Marty draws comics and pictures the people he dislikes as monsters. In high school a bully torments him until Sally, a gadget inventor, steps in; the two become best friends. He falls for her, and she does not feel the same. Her adoptive parents set strict rules, so the pair use a telescope and a codebook of clothing signals to communicate beyond what the parents permit. Sally also mentions a secret project she is working on. Both enroll at the same college as fine arts students, and a publisher, Renegade Komiks, offers Marty a chance to pitch a comic.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Saving Sally (2016)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Principal photography began in 2005 and stalled over budget until French producer Alain de la Mata, impressed by the idea, came aboard and asked director Avid Liongoren to reshoot because the sound and special effects were poor; the film's 3D elements, puppets and cast dressed as monsters were scrapped for 2D animation.
- Anna Larrucea played Sally in the abandoned 2005 shoot and was unavailable when Avid Liongoren reshot, so a long audition was held and Rhian Ramos, who had never done an indie film or auditioned before, got the part after co-star TJ Trinidad invited her to try out.
- Charlene Sawit spent two and a half years writing Saving Sally as a novel called Monster Town, but after her tote bag holding the manuscript was stolen from her car she took a months-long hiatus and rebuilt the story as a short story instead.
- The filmmakers launched a Facebook campaign asking theater owners to screen the film, and the hashtags #ShowSavingSally and #ImSavingSally helped push its theater count from 53 to 65 across the Philippines in December 2016.
- Budget constraints stopped the producers of Saving Sally from buying Macs, so the animation was made on Hackintosh setups built from commodity Windows PCs.
