Plot summary
Under Alaska's permafrost, organic material has rotted for thousands of years. As the ground thaws, liquid methane and gases escape and set off a series of destructive earthquakes. Michael Webster, a geologist studying the Alaskan landscape for the military, is out with his wife Emily and their children Tia and Shane to find a Christmas tree when a gas explosion under the ice opens a fissure and an avalanche comes down. The family runs, and another tremor splits the ground into a deep ravine, the parents on one side and the two children on the other. Michael tells the children to make for the summit and wait for rescue. Soldiers based around the mountain investigate the tremors and find no tectonic movement, no reading on the Richter scale, and no volcanic eruption.
